I'd be willing to bet a soda from the machine that they've done something, installed something, on your new machine that's causing issues. Based on their recommendation that you turn off the nVidia card in your laptop in favor of using the integrated graphics, they don't seem particularly, um, what's the word I'm looking for here. I'm going to go ahead and suggest maybe your IT department may have screwed you over here somehow. Anyone have any ideas why I'd be experiencing such sluggish response? Surely Autocad/Inventor are optimized to run on the latest computer hardware these days? It's a brand new system built from scratch. Same deal with Inventor, if I try and open the styles editor or edit a dimension, it takes 2-3s for it to respond. If I select a dimension line on a drawing it is literally taking 3.5-4s after clicking the dimension line (or text box) before I can move my cursor or start typing. I'm finding that the reaction times for simple things, especially in Autocad are incredibly slow. The OS and Autodesk Design suite are installed on the SSD and all files/projects are saved to the HDD. This system is being used for CAD Drafting (Autocad 2014) and 3D modeling and rendering using Autodesk Inventor 2014 and 3DS Max (which I haven't had to use yet).

So I ended up getting a new desktop PC at work as my old laptop was struggling and the issues continued even after having IT look at it. Yes, the 670M (and a laptop in general) will be slower than an equivalent desktop pc, so if you're determined to get a new system, do you NEED a laptop? if you want maximum Inventor performance for your $ then look at a desktop system.

Install the LATEST nvidia drivers (using the clean install option) and check all chipset drivers are also the latest.Īlso make sure all settings (in Windows power management and the Nvidia options are set to performance over power saving) and anything linked to Nvidia Optimus is set to use the 670M instead of the HD 4000. I would make sure this 670M is enabled and used instead of the HD 4000. it is also a LOT slower/less powerful than the 670M benchmarks give the 670M at 1906 ( ) and the HD 4000 at 454 ( ) - assuming these to be linear then it's about 4 times the power. It doesn't have its own memory to uses up some of the system ram, which is ironically what your IT seem to be accusing the 670M of doing.

The HD4000 is an on-board graphics chip that is inside the i7 processor. So I have no idea what your IT are meaning by it using memory. It's almost worth a good wipe and start again every year or so, if performance is your primary goal, as Windows generally gets a little more bloated and slower as time goes on and more and more cr4p gets installed/uninstalled.Īs far as I know the 670M is available with either 1.5gb or 3gb on board - this is its own ram and is independant to the system memory. And always make sure your drivers are up to date. Strip out all the rubbish that comes with the laptop, which bloats it. If the laptop is generally slow/problematic then in all honesty it might be best to wipe and re-install Windows fresh.
